What is an IP address lookup?
An IP address lookup takes any public IPv4 or IPv6 address and returns everything that can be inferred from it: the approximate geographic location (country, region and city), the Internet Service Provider (ISP) and its Autonomous System Number (ASN), the connection type, and whether the address behaves like a proxy, VPN, or datacenter host. IPFighter combines multiple geolocation databases with a live threat-intelligence blocklist to also estimate an IP reputation score — how trustworthy the address looks to fraud-detection systems used by banks, marketplaces and social platforms.
What does this lookup tell you about an IP address?
Geolocation
IP geolocation maps an address to a physical region using databases maintained by regional internet registries and commercial providers. It is accurate to the country level almost always, and to the city level most of the time — but it is an estimate, not GPS. A mismatch between the city shown here and where a user actually is usually means the traffic is passing through a VPN, proxy, or a corporate/ISP gateway in another city.
ISP, organization and ASN
Every routable IP belongs to a network identified by an ASN (Autonomous System Number). The ASN and organization name reveal whether the address is run by a consumer ISP (residential broadband or mobile), a hosting company (datacenter), a cloud provider, or a business. This distinction is the single biggest factor in how platforms treat the connection.
Connection type & proxy detection
Residential and mobile IPs are trusted because they map to real people. Datacenter and hosting IPs are frequently used for automation, scraping and fraud, so they are scrutinized far more heavily and often blocked outright. When this tool marks an IP as non-residential, it means the ASN belongs to a hosting or cloud network.
Threat blacklist
We check the address against a global threat-intelligence blocklist that aggregates IPs seen distributing spam, scanning ports, running brute-force attacks, or exploiting vulnerabilities. A listed IP will be rejected or heavily throttled by many mail servers, login systems and content networks.
Reputation score
The score above is a 0–100% estimate of how trustworthy this IP looks to anti-fraud systems — it starts at 100% and drops for non-residential (datacenter) addresses and threat-blacklist listings. Roughly, 80–100% behaves like a clean residential connection, 40–79% may be challenged on strict sites, and below 40% is likely blocked or captcha-gated. The IP Scoreboard weights these signals per platform (Amazon, Google, Facebook, TikTok and more).
Frequently asked questions
What does an IP address lookup show?
An IP lookup takes any public IPv4 or IPv6 address and returns what can be inferred from it: the approximate location (country, region and city), the Internet Service Provider (ISP) and its ASN, the connection type, whether the address looks like a proxy, VPN or datacenter host, and a reputation score estimating how trustworthy it appears to fraud-detection systems.
Can I look up any IP address?
Yes. Leave the field on your own IP, or enter any public address to open a dedicated page for it (for example /ip-lookup/8.8.8.8). Both IPv4 and IPv6 are supported. Private ranges like 192.168.x.x cannot be located because they are not routable on the public internet.
How accurate is IP geolocation?
IP geolocation is reliable at the country level and usually correct at the city level, but it is an estimate based on network databases, not GPS. The result points to where the IP is registered or routed, which can be a nearby city or the ISP gateway rather than the exact physical location.
Why does my IP location show a different city?
Your ISP may route your connection through a gateway in another city, or the geolocation database may map your IP block to the provider registered location. A large mismatch usually means the traffic is passing through a VPN, proxy, or mobile carrier network.
What is an ASN, and why does it matter?
An ASN (Autonomous System Number) identifies the network that owns an IP address. It reveals whether the address belongs to a consumer ISP (residential or mobile), a hosting company, or a cloud provider — the single biggest factor in how websites treat the connection.
What is the difference between a residential and a datacenter IP?
A residential IP maps to a real home internet connection and is trusted by most platforms. A datacenter or hosting IP is often used for automation and is scrutinized far more heavily, so it faces more CAPTCHAs and blocks. This tool flags which type an address belongs to.
Does an IP lookup reveal a person identity or exact address?
No. An IP lookup shows network-level details and an approximate location only. It cannot reveal a name, street address, or any personal identity — that information is held privately by the ISP and released only through legal process.
Is the IP address lookup free?
Yes. You can look up your own IP or any public address for free, with no account, no download, and no installation required.
