How to disable WebRTC for online privacy without leaks

Maybe all without your knowledge, a high-sercurity website could use WebRTC to trick your browser into revealing an IP address that could identify your real location.

What is WebRTC?

WebRTC is an open-source that allows real-time media communicate between browsers and devices like phone calling, video calling, online meeting, sharing files, live streaming,… inside a webpage or a web app faster and less lag without going through any 3rd party platform.

WebRTC wouldn’t be a problem if it weren’t for the vulnerability to expose users’ IP addresses.

Why WebRTC leaks real IP address?

Any two devices in communications need to know each other’s real IP addresses. This standardized technology could allow a third-party website to exploit the WebRTC in your browser to detect your real IP address and use it to identify you even if you are using a proxy and/or a VPN.

Many user are not even aware that WebRTC is on, as it’s enabled by default in many browsers, including Chrome, Opera, Firefox and Microsoft Edge.

How to fix WebRTC leakage?

The easiest way to avoid revealing your real IP address be leaked via WebRTC is using extensions. There are three Chrome extensions known to successfully disable WebRTC leaks:

  1. WebRTC Control
  2. WebRTC Network Litmiter
  3. Easy WebRTC Block

WebRTC Network Limiter is an official Google add-on that specifically stops IP leaks without totally blocking WebRTC.

In this writing, I introduce how to add WebRTC Control extension to Chrome. Follow these simple steps: and then you could search up for your browsers you regular use:

  1. Open the Chrome Web Store and search for “WebRTC Control” keyword or click this link: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/webrtc-control/fjkmabmdepjfammlpliljpnbhleegehm
  2. Click Add to Chrome and confirm installation by pressing Add extension.
  3. Activate the extension and it’ll disable WebRTC in your Chrome browser.

Although these extension known to successfully disable WebRTC leakage, using them to turn off WebRTC IP leakage is not really the safest solution. In some high-sercurity websites, the browser will still be able to detect your real IP address. For additional security, you can use antidetect browser (e.g Multilogin, Hidemyacc).

With antidetect browser, you can create multiple browser profiles and run them simultaneously from just one device and each profile has a different WebRTC based on the profile’s IP. You also can alter or disable WebRTC easily and turn on enhanced protection feature.

Conclusion, to block WebRTC leaks, you can use extension and/or antidetect browser. This is the simple but best methods to protect you is revealed your IP location. Further more, let’s consider to use antidetect browser because it will helps you stay completely private online.
